TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #008 | PIPELINE TRAIL (PRESCOTT, AZ)
In this episode of TORCH Trail Reviews, we’re heading into the Bradshaw Mountains to explore the Pipeline Trail. We’ve teamed up with Jordan from @thatone_trailboss to see how a modern mid-sized build handles the granite ledges and winding forest roads that make Prescott a premier off-road destination.
Tucked away off the historic Senator Highway, the Pipeline Trail is a standout drive in the Wolf Creek area. It’s an ideal "shakedown" run for off-roaders looking to test their suspension travel and clearance before hitting more aggressive Arizona terrain.
TRAIL OVERVIEW
The Pipeline Trail is a roughly 5-mile route cutting through the heart of Prescott National Forest. Starting near 6,000 feet in elevation, the trail winds through dense pine forests and open ridgelines, offering sweeping views of the Bradshaws. While much of the route follows scenic dirt roads, a signature obstacle adds a technical element that goes beyond a casual Sunday drive.
THE TERRAIN
The terrain is rated as Beginner / Easy, with one Moderate section (5/10).
-
Forest Roads: Expect well-maintained dirt and gravel as you approach from Senator Highway.
-
The Rock Ledge: The highlight of the trail is a steep, rocky ledge section. This is where you’ll want to shift into 4-Lo and carefully pick your line. The uneven granite makes it an excellent place to evaluate suspension articulation, clearance, and practice your spotting.
-
Weather Factor: Prescott weather can change quickly. Summer rains can turn these dusty trails into slick mud, and winter snow can make the rock obstacles significantly more treacherous.

THE EXPERIENCE
Pipeline is a great "afternoon adventure." Because of its proximity to downtown Prescott, you can be on the trail within 30 minutes of leaving Whiskey Row.
-
Wolf Creek Scenery: The trail runs through the scenic Wolf Creek area, known for its tall pines and granite outcroppings.
-
Testing Your Build: We watched Jordan navigate the main obstacle to demonstrate how a properly lifted mid-sized truck (like a Chevy Colorado or Toyota Tacoma) handles ledge climbs without dragging the frame.
-
Camping: If you’re looking to make it an overnight trip, there are dispersed camping sites located near the front entrance of the trail. Just remember that the Prescott Basin has specific "Designated Dispersed" rules. Make sure you’re in a marked site to keep these trails open.
TIPS FROM THE SCOUT
-
Air Down: Even though it’s a shorter trail, airing down to 18–22 PSI will significantly soften the ride over the rocky sections and provide the grip needed for the main ledge.
-
Know Your Clearance: The main obstacle offers multiple lines. If you're running a stock-height rig, bring a spotter to avoid contacting the granite.
-
Senator Highway Access: Pipeline is often combined with a longer run down Senator Highway toward Crown King. It’s a great way to add some technical sections to a long-distance overland route.
