TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #013 | WINDROCK OFF ROAD PARK (TN)

In this installment of TORCH Trail Reviews, we’re checking out Windrock Park in Tennessee. We teamed up with the crew from @KnockoutOffroad to see how their rigs handle two of the park’s well-known routes: Trail 26 and Trail 27.

Windrock is known for its rugged and demanding terrain, and these trails showcase exactly why it has become a staple destination for East Coast wheelers. Even heavily built rigs on 40-inch or larger tires still find plenty of challenge on these technical routes.

TRAIL OVERVIEW

Located in Oliver Springs, Tennessee, Windrock Park spans over 73,000 acres of privately owned riding area and features hundreds of miles of off-road trails. For this field report, we zeroed in on Trails 26 and 27. While short in distance compared to some of our other reviews, these trails focus heavily on technical, low-speed obstacles that challenge your tire placement, clearance, and driving precision.

Trail 26 is one of Windrock’s most recognized routes and has earned Jeep Badge of Honor status, making it a popular destination for rock-crawling enthusiasts visiting East Tennessee.

THE TERRAIN

The terrain on Trails 26 and 27 ranges from moderate to hard depending on trail conditions and recent weather.

Rock Ledges & Boulders: Both trails feature rock ledges, loose boulders, and technical climbs that require good articulation, steady throttle control, and careful tire placement to clear.

Slick Mud & Ruts: Given the East Tennessee climate, the dirt tracks can quickly turn slick after rain. Deep ruts and muddy sections are common, making line choice important to avoid dragging differentials or getting hung up.

Tight Wooded Corridors: The trails wind through dense forests with limited room for error. Navigating larger rigs through these sections requires constant attention to avoid contact with trees and trail obstacles.

THE EXPERIENCE

Scouting with the @KnockoutOffroad crew highlighted the value of a well-engineered suspension setup when tackling tight, technical woods trails.

Flex & Articulation: Watching the Jeep Cherokee and Comanche work through the rock obstacles demonstrates how important suspension travel can be. Keeping tires planted helps maintain traction and control when the terrain gets uneven.

The Mud Factor: Even a light coating of moisture can drastically change the nature of an obstacle. Climbs that appear straightforward in dry conditions quickly become far more technical when rocks and dirt turn slick.

Technical Driving: Unlike high-speed desert routes, success on these trails comes from patience, throttle control, and choosing the correct line. Slow, deliberate driving often pays off more than relying on momentum.

TIPS FROM THE SCOUT

Armor Up: Rock sliders, skid plates, and differential protection are highly recommended. Expect occasional contact with rocks and ledges throughout both trails.

Locking Differentials: Lockers can make a significant difference on the steeper climbs and slicker obstacles. Maintaining traction is far easier when power is delivered evenly to both tires.

Air Down: Lower tire pressures help maximize traction on rocks, roots, and muddy surfaces. Drivers running beadlocks can safely air down even further to increase tire footprint and grip.

SUMMARY STATS

Location: Windrock Park (Oliver Springs, TN)

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Trails Featured: Trail 26 & Trail 27

Terrain: Rock ledges, boulders, slick mud, deep ruts, and tight wooded trails

Recommended Setup: High-clearance 4x4 with aggressive tires, recovery gear, and underbody protection. Lockers and 35”+ tires are beneficial for the tougher obstacles.

THE VERDICT

Windrock is a staple destination for East Coast wheelers, and Trails 26 and 27 deliver exactly the kind of technical, slow-speed crawling the park is known for. It’s a demanding landscape that quickly exposes weak points in a build, but rewards drivers with some of the best technical wheeling in the Southeast.

Huge thanks to @KnockoutOffroad for showing us how their rigs handle these Windrock trails!
