1998–2011 Ford Ranger Lift Kit FAQ

How do I know if my Ford Ranger has a torsion bar suspension, and will this kit fit my specific trim?

Checking your front suspension type is simple—just look directly behind your front tire:

  • Torsion Bar Suspension: You will see a long metal bar extending from your lower control arm back to a crossmember underneath the cab, and no coil spring around the front shock.
  • Coil Spring Suspension: You will see a prominent coil spring seated directly behind the wheel assembly.

Nearly 99% of 1998–2011 Ford Rangers without a front coil spring utilize a torsion bar setup. All 1998–2011 Ford Ranger 4WD (4x4) models, as well as 2000–2011 2WD Edge and Sport models, come standard with torsion bar suspension. If your Ranger fits these specifications, our TORCH Off Road torsion key lift kits will fit your truck.

Do I need to buy a specific tool to install the front torsion keys, or can I use a standard C-clamp?

We strongly advise against using a standard hardware C-clamp. Torsion bars hold an immense amount of pressure, and standard clamps can easily slip, bend, or fail, posing a serious safety risk during installation. We recommend using a dedicated Torsion Key Unloading Tool to safely release tension on the factory keys and complete the swap securely.

What is the maximum tire size I can run with a 3" lift without rubbing or trimming my fenders?

With a 3" TORCH Off Road lift kit installed, the recommended maximum tire size is 33" (such as 285/70/17 or 33x11.5R17). While 33" tires fit well, minor trimming of the inner plastic fender liner may be required depending on your wheel offset to avoid rubbing at full steering lock. If you want a guaranteed fitment with zero trimming or body modifications, a 32" tire is the sweet spot.

Will this 3" lift kit require extended shocks or longer brake lines?

Extended brake lines are not required for a 3" lift on these Ranger models. While extended shocks are not strictly mandatory just to raise the vehicle, factory-length shocks will severely limit your suspension travel and degrade ride quality. Our complete TORCH Off Road Ranger lift kits include properly valved extended shocks, providing nearly 30% more travel, improved off-road articulation, and a smoother highway ride.

What is the difference between lifting the rear using an Add-a-Leaf versus Extended Shackles?

Both methods successfully raise the rear of your truck, but they serve different performance goals depending on how you use your Ranger:
