TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #005 | HISTORIC SITES & DEVIL'S KNOB (OZARKS, AR)

For the fifth installment of our TORCH Trail Review series, we’re heading back into the canopy of the Ozark National Forest. We’ve teamed up with the crew at @2fatguysadventurechannel to scout a 33-mile journey through some of Arkansas’ most unique hidden history and scenic overlooks.

If you’re looking for a route that balances technical water crossings with historic landmarks and high-altitude ridge climbs, this trek is a great addition to your overland itinerary.

TRAIL OVERVIEW

Located in the heart of the Ozarks north of Clarksville AR, this route is a 33-mile point-to-point journey that transitions from river valleys to some of the highest fire lookouts in the forest. Unlike our previous desert drives, this trail features dense forest tunnels, historic 1920s architecture, and the unpredictable water levels of Big Piney Creek.

THE TERRAIN

The terrain is rated as Easy to Moderate (3/10), but this is heavily weather-dependent. In the Ozarks, a heavy rain can quickly turn a dry forest road into a technical mud or water challenge.

A Word of Caution: The entry to this route requires a crossing of Big Piney Creek. Always check water depths before proceeding, especially after a storm. Additionally, while much of the trail is on Forest Service Roads (FSR), several sections border private property. It's important to stay on the designated trail to preserve access for the off-road community.

THE EXPERIENCE

This is a full-day overland experience that rewards drivers with a mix of history and spectacular vistas. The route features several notable landmarks:

Union School & Cemetery (FSR 1409): A beautifully preserved schoolhouse built in 1929. Accessible only after crossing Big Piney Creek.

Bub’s Cabin (FSR 1405): A rustic piece of local history kept open by a forest legend. A perfect spot for a mid-day break.

Devil’s Knob Fire Tower (FSR 1432A): One of the highest points in the region, with 360-degree views of the Ozark canopy, ideal for a sunset cookout.

TIPS FROM THE SCOUTS

Respect the History: The Union School is privately owned and maintained. If you stop to explore, please leave a donation in the box to assist with its upkeep.

Watch the Water: High-clearance is a must for the Big Piney crossing. If the creek is running high, high-mount breathers or a snorkel are recommended.

Stay on Track: After leaving Bub's Cabin, ensure you remain on the FSR tracks. The surrounding land is private property and the locals are protective of their boundaries.
