TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #006 | EAGLE CANYON (SAN RAFAEL SWELL, UT)
For the sixth installment of our TORCH Trail Review series, we’re heading into the heart of Utah’s high desert: the San Rafael Swell. We’ve teamed up with the experts at @legendarytrails to scout Eagle Canyon, a route that blends geological scale, ancient history, and technical desert driving.
If you’ve ever wanted to navigate narrow canyon floors while interstate bridges tower hundreds of feet above you, this trek west of Green River, UT should be on your bucket list.
TRAIL OVERVIEW
Eagle Canyon is a standout route within the San Rafael Swell, known for its dramatic transitions and often run as part of the Swasey Cabin Loop. The trail takes you from wide-open desert vistas deep into narrow, winding canyons. It's one of the few places where you can witness the intersection of modern engineering and ancient history in a single afternoon.
THE TERRAIN
The terrain is rated as Moderate (5/10). While much of the route consists of sandy washes and relatively flat canyon floors, the Swell is famous for its unpredictable "slickrock" and occasional rocky ledge.
A Word of Caution: Because this route primarily follows canyon floors, weather awareness is critical. Flash floods are a real danger in the San Rafael Swell. Always check the forecast and avoid this trail if there is rain in the region. The sandy washes can also become surprisingly soft, requiring consistent momentum.

THE EXPERIENCE
This isn't just a scenic drive, it’s a journey through the various eras of Utah’s history. The route features several notable landmarks:
Swasey Cabin: A historic homestead that offers a glimpse into the rugged lives of the early desert pioneers who settled in this remote wilderness.
The I-70 Bridges: A surreal moment in the trail where you pass directly beneath the massive interstate bridges. Standing on the canyon floor looking up at the 300-foot spans is a perspective few people ever see.
Lone Warrior Pictographs: A 1,000-year-old piece of Native American history. Please remember to view from a distance and refrain from touching the rock art to ensure its preservation.
TIPS FROM THE SCOUT
Watch the Walls: Some sections of the canyon floor narrow significantly. If you're running a full-size rig or wide-offset wheels, pick your lines carefully to avoid "canyon rash."
Traction Matters: The mix of soft sand and slickrock means tire pressure is key. Airing down will significantly improve your ride quality and footprint in the washes.
Pack for Remoteness: The San Rafael Swell is notoriously isolated. Ensure you have plenty of water, a full spare, and a reliable GPS or satellite communicator, as cell service is non-existent once you drop into the canyon.
