TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #010 | CAR WASH FALLS & LIMESTONE (OZARKS, AR)
Have you ever driven your rig directly under a waterfall? For the tenth installment of TORCH Trail Reviews, we’re heading back into the Ozark National Forest. We’ve teamed up with the crew of @jeepinandexplorin to navigate the rugged bluffs and iconic water features of the Limestone and Car Wash Falls trails.
This route isn't just about the picture-perfect moments. It’s a real Arkansas adventure that demands respect for the terrain and a solid understanding of water crossings.
TRAIL OVERVIEW
Located near Limestone, Arkansas, this trail system offers roughly 8-10 miles of technical driving through one of the most scenic regions in the Ozark National Forest. The route is famous for its limestone shelf roads and the "natural car wash" that gives the trail its namesake, but the creek crossings and slick rock surfaces keep it from being a simple drive.
THE TERRAIN
The terrain is rated as Moderate (5/10), though water levels can quickly change that difficulty.
Car Wash Falls: The highlight of the trip. The trail leads you directly under a natural limestone overhang where a waterfall spills over the ledge. The rocky, water-filled approach can become slick and uneven after rainfall, so high-clearance 4x4 vehicles are strongly recommended.
Limestone Shelf Roads: Expect narrow paths carved into the side of the bluffs. These sections offer incredible views but require a steady hand and a narrow footprint.
Creek Crossings: This route is defined by water. You’ll encounter multiple crossings with variable depths and slick, mossy limestone bottoms that can challenge your traction.

THE EXPERIENCE
Scouting the Ozarks with the @jeepinandexplorin crew highlighted exactly why this region is a popular destination for off-roaders and overlanders.
The Scenery: Between the dense forest canopy and the sheer rock faces, this trail offers an incredible visual experience. It’s a breathtaking mix of rugged utility and natural beauty.
Technical Driving: While many come for the waterfall photo, the water crossings and mud-slicked climbs between the falls can really put your build to the test. Waterproofing your vitals and having reliable recovery points is recommended here.
TIPS FROM THE SCOUT
Check Water Levels: After heavy rain, the creek crossings can become impassable. Always scout the depth before you commit, especially if you haven't relocated your breathers.
Tire Pressure is Key: The limestone in Arkansas is notoriously slick when wet. Airing down will help you "wrap" your tires around the shelf ledges and maintain grip in the creek beds.
Pack a Rain Jacket: Even if it’s a clear day, passing under the falls is a wet experience for the rig (and often the driver).

SUMMARY STATS

Difficulty: Moderate
Terrain: Technical creek crossings, limestone shelf roads, and forest floor

Car Wash Falls is a bucket-list route for any off-roader in the area. If you’re looking for a drive that offers both a challenge and a photo opportunity, the Ozarks are calling your name.
