TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #011 | RATTLESNAKE CANYON (SAN BERNARDINO, CA)

Ready for a day of high-desert exploration and mining relics? In this episode of TORCH Trail Reviews, we teamed up with Wonder Offroad (@wonderoffroad) to explore Rattlesnake Canyon. Running from Highway 247 up to 2N02, this trail offers a spectacular transition from sandy desert washes into the rocky mountain foothills of California.

While the obstacles may not be extreme, the remote nature of this canyon makes it a long trail that rewards patience and preparation.

TRAIL OVERVIEW

Rattlesnake Canyon serves as a scenic bridge between Johnson Valley and the San Bernardino Mountains. Spanning roughly 16 miles, this isn't a quick detour. Most groups should plan for roughly 4-6 hours depending on trail conditions and stops. The route climbs steadily in elevation, moving from the open desert floor into the rocky corridors and high-mountain landscapes of the San Bernardino Mountains.

THE TERRAIN

The terrain is rated as Easy to Moderate (3/10), but the trail length is the primary challenge.

Sandy Washes: The lower sections feature soft, sandy washes that require steady momentum to avoid digging in.

Rocky Canyons & Boulders: As you gain elevation, the trail narrows into rocky canyon floors. You’ll navigate moderate boulders and uneven shelves that require careful tire placement.

Tight Brush: The canyon walls are home to thick desert vegetation. In the tighter sections, "desert pinstriping" is common, so keep that in mind if you’re worried about your paint.

THE EXPERIENCE

Scouting with the @wonderoffroad crew highlighted the historic side of California wheeling.

Mining Relics: The area is peppered with well-preserved remnants of the region’s rich mining history. Taking the time to hop out and explore these ruins adds a unique experience that you wouldn’t find on more technical rock crawling trails.

Changing Landscapes: One of the best parts of Rattlesnake Canyon is the visual variety. Watching the scenery shift from Joshua trees to mountain brush as the temperature drops is a classic SoCal overland experience.

TIPS FROM THE SCOUT

Pack a Lunch: This is a long day in a remote area. Bring plenty of water, food, and a full tank of gas. There are no services once you leave the highway.

Take Your Time: Don't rush the rocky sections. The trail is bumpy and relentless. Airing down your tires is essential to save your suspension (and your back) over the 16-mile haul.

Check Your Rig: Because of the travel time and remote location, ensure your cooling system and tires are in top shape before heading out.

THE VERDICT

Rattlesnake Canyon is a "must-do" for those who love the journey as much as the destination. It’s a straightforward drive for most capable 4x4s, but it demands attention and a prepared mindset. If you want a full day of solitude, history, and classic high-desert scenery, this is the trail for you.
