TORCH TRAIL REVIEW #021 | TORREY MOUNTAIN ROAD (BERKSHIRE MTNS, MA)
Thinking about tackling one of the most feared stretches of trail in the Northeast? Torrey Mountain Road climbs out of the Deerfield River valley near the Hoosac Tunnel in Florida, Massachusetts, deep in the Berkshire Mountains. What starts as a rough but manageable climb quickly turns into a serious test, not just of your rig's capability, but of your nerve.
TRAIL OVERVIEW
How difficult is Torrey Mountain Road? This is a solid intermediate-to-advanced route, commonly rated around a 6 out of 10 by the off-road community. The trail runs in distinct stretches: a rutted climb at the start, a washed-out rocky middle section, and a narrower, overgrown final stretch through the woods.
THE TERRAIN
Rocky, Rutted Climbs: The starting section is rough and uneven, with exposed rock and deep ruts that demand careful line choice.
Washed-Out Midsection: The trail's middle stretch has eroded into a jagged, unpredictable washout, testing ground clearance and articulation.
Narrow Forest Corridors: The final stretch tightens into overgrown, brush-choked woods with little margin for wider rigs.
THE DANGER: A CRUMBLING EDGE
Torrey Mountain Road's real reputation comes from a stretch where the road runs along a steep drop-off, with the trail surface at the edge crumbling away. It's a fall and rollover hazard, where a slide off the wrong line could carry a vehicle downhill. Captured as the most harrowing stretch in the video, it's the reason local off-roaders treat this trail with respect.
2020 JEEP WRANGLER JL OFF-ROAD REVIEW
Scouting Torrey Mountain Road with RDOverland in his 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL, running a 2" suspension lift and 35-inch mud-terrain tires, showed how much of a difference the right setup makes on a trail like this. The JL's build also included a high-clearance steel front bumper with a winch, 18-inch wheels, and rock sliders, solid protection through the trail's rockier sections.
35s and Lift Paid Off: The 2" lift and 35-inch tires gave the Jeep a real clearance advantage, where a smaller tire and stock-height rig would have struggled.
Rock Sliders, But No Skid Plates: Even with solid rocker protection, the Jeep ran the trail without underbody skid plates, which was cause for concern through the trail's water sections.
The Crumbling Edge: No amount of lift or tire size fully neutralizes the trail's real hazard. The drop-off requires careful line choice and an experienced driver to safely navigate, no matter the vehicle.
TIPS FROM THE SCOUT
Don’t Go Solo: This isn't a trail to run alone. Although RDOverland made it through safely, a second rig or spotter can be the difference between a manageable mistake and a dangerous situation.
Check Before Committing: Get out and walk unfamiliar sections, especially anywhere the trail runs near a drop-off.
Is a Lift Kit Required for Torrey Mountain Road? Given the trail's mix of technical terrain and its hazardous sections, a stock-height rig is taking on real risk.
Lifted Stance Recommended: A 2"+ lift, like this Jeep JL's setup, adds needed clearance through the rocky terrain.
35" Tires: The JL's 35s are a good baseline for this route.
Rock Sliders Help, But Don't Skip Skid Plates: Rocker protection is valuable, but full underbody armor matters on a trail with this much exposed rock.
Whether you're driving a Wrangler or another platform, a properly fitted lift kit and the right tires can make the difference between a controlled line and a real problem.
